Q. What is Reference Level?
A. ‘Reference level’ is an industry standard volume that movies are mixed and mastered in studio. It is how movie directors and sound teams intended their film to be heard, with full impact across dialogue, music, effects and ambience. Most cinemas play movies slightly below reference level to strike a balance between impact and the comfort of the average audience.
During Quake reference sessions, we turn the levels up, and for some this can be very loud, especially during action scenes or dramatic peaks.
It’s a great movie experience, but it may feel louder than what you’re used to.
